Dutch Honorary Consuls represent the Netherlands in states that do not have an embassy or consulate general. Mrs. van Thoor will help strengthen the economic ties between the Netherlands and Colorado, as well as New Mexico and Wyoming by helping Dutch and American businesses connect. Additionally, she will also provide consular support for Dutch nationals in need.
Consul General Gerbert Kunst stated, “Colorado and the Netherlands share an entrepreneurial spirit and our government is delighted to continue our honorary consulate here. In recent years, Colorado and the Netherlands have expanded their cooperation, in agriculture, climate change and innovation. This spring, a Colorado delegation will visit Dutch agricultural companies. I’m impressed by Mrs. Van Thoor’s professional and community network. I look forward to working with her as we build more bridges between Colorado and the Netherlands.”
Mrs. Van Thoor owns a consulting firm, and previously worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers, Schiphol Airport and ABN AMRO Bank. She has lived in Denver since 2012 with her husband and two children. “It is an honor to have the opportunity to connect the Netherlands, where I was born, and Colorado, the place I call my home,”, she said. “I am looking forward to create opportunities and synergies for businesses in the Netherlands and the states of Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming. These states are very similar to the Netherlands, with a focus on agriculture, sustainability and technology. Anne Frank
The Honorary Consul and the Consulate General of the Netherlands in San Francisco will set up a pop-up consulate in Denver late April. Goals is to connect businesses from the Netherlands and Colorado, and renew passports from Dutch nationals in Denver. They will also bring an exhibition on Anne Frank’s life to middle and high schools to Denver this April. The exhibition, “Anne Frank: a History for Today,” travels around the world and tells a story of discrimination and exclusion, but also one of hope and determination.
Top 10 trading partner
The Netherlands, a country of 17 million people, is a top 10 trading partner with Colorado. The state exports $275 million in goods to the Netherlands, which helps support almost 8,000 jobs in Colorado. Nearly 100,000 Coloradans are of Dutch descent.
The United States and the Netherlands share 400 years of history: the Netherlands was actually the first country to give the United States a loan. Today, the US exports $60 billion in goods to the Netherlands, and their economic ties support 825,000 American jobs. The Netherlands, inventor of Wifi and Bluetooth, is the fourth most innovative country in the world. Because of efficient production methods, it is the second largest exporter of agricultural goods, right behind the United States.
